PRESENTATION OF MIMIS PLESSAS’ NEW CD “Jazz is not what we play but how we play it”! These are the words of the composer Mimis Plessas, which we find in the enter of his new cd, titled “Mimis Plessas and the Jazz Quartet Live. Jazz the way we like it”, that contains the live recording of the concert of November 2005 at “Mylos” Club in Thesalonica, where performanced Mimis Plessas and his Jazz Quartet. They were guests by the 17th Ethnic-Jazz Festival of Dimitria, as the most representative jazz band of our country. ------------------------------------------------------- MIMIS PLESSAS & THE JAZZ QUARTET JAZZ… THE WAY WE LIKE IT ARTWAY – TECHNOTROPON “Jazz is not what we play, but how we play it”, used to say mimis Plessas, one of the Greek pioneers of jazz music expression in our country, since he’s been occupied with it since the beginning of the ’50 decade. The c.d. “Jazz…the way we like it” is the best proof. It is all about a live recording which happened at “Milos” Club of Thesaloniki on November 2005, in the fames of the 17th ethno-jazz festival of “Dimitria”, with Mimis Plessas’s Quartet –Titos kalliris (guitar)Nikos Tsesmelis (bass), Yorgos Lavranos (Kontrabass), and Thanos Georgoulas (saxophone-flute)- and interpreters Zoe Kouroukli, Evi Siamanta and Yorgos Perris. In the c.d. there are two more songs that were recorded at the same place a few months later. The final result is very good. Of course it’s a fact, that many friends of jazz music, have heard some wonderful recordings, but the truth is, that the five musicians, who defend classic international standards and some compositions of Mimis Plessas, have no reason to envy their European and American colleagues. Zoe Kouroukli performs impressively three songs, songs interpreted by mythic voices. Very good is the presence of Evi Siamanta and Yorgos Perris, as well. A series of standards, with first music peace the “C-Jamm Blues” by Jimmy Smith, one of the biggest Mimis Plessas’s influences, and a jazz performance of Markos Vamvakari’s song “Ta matoklada sou lamboun”, as well, in great adaptations. In this c.d., you can hear the great Zoe Kouroukli at the “I’ve got you under my skin”and “Cry me a river” and a wonderful solo piano of Plessas at the “Lullaby of the leaves” as well of the pianist Errol Garner and also, two more standards, the one belongs to Miles Davis “Millestones” and the other one to Mimis Plessas “Theme A”, his first composition. The voices of the c.d., apart from the classic one of Zoe Kouroukli, are, the young of Evi Siamanta at the “An einai I agapi amartia” (Plessas) and Yorgos Perris at the medley “Et Maintenant”/ And now my love". In total, there are 15 very good songs and compositions. A very serious live production. Now, he releases the c.d. “Mimis Plessas & the jazz Quartet live, under the title, Jazz … the way we like it” from the concert that, his old quartet and Mimis Plessas had given on November 2005 at “Milos” Club of Thessaloniki, in the frames of “Dimitria”. With his exceptional skill at the piano, the famous composer leads his musicians and the three singers at a performance of excellent classic jazz compositions and his compositions as well. Plessas’s skill is well known, the musicians of his quartet Titos kalliris, Nikos Tsesmelis, Yorgos Lavranos and Thanos Georgoulas are excellent. The result is good hearing music and, the most important, you can hear it everywhere. The exceptional Zoe Kouroukli is a real gift to the listeners, in one of her most rare appearances. Yorgos Perris, and Evi Siamanta are also participate. The c.d. is released from the record company “Polytropon” and the Cultural Corporation “Artway –Technotropon”.
